There’s no doubt about it: Vancouver loves its dogs.
If you want proof, look at what happened ahead of the November 7 mass dog adoption, when more than 100 small-breed death-row dogs were flown from California to YVR. Dozens of would-be pet parents were turned away after Thank Dog I Am Out received hundreds upon hundreds of applicants for its dogs.
Well, have no fear. There is no shortage of dogs both big and small in Metro Vancouver – and they all need forever homes.
L.E.A.S.H. Animal Welfare Society, a non-profit rescue, takes in dogs from all over, but primarily B.C., Manitoba and California. Those dogs are placed in foster care until a forever home is found.
“We have helped five-pound Chihuahuas and 125-pound bully breeds. We don’t discriminate on breeds and will help any dog that requires it as long as we have a compatible foster home,” Cassi Quinn from L.E.A.S.H. told Vancity Buzz.
L.E.A.S.H. is strict about its application process, but with good reason: It wants dogs to be matched with their perfect parents – to ensure their success and happiness.
Here are 14 great dogs that you can currently adopt through L.E.A.S.H.
Justin: Two-year-old Chiweenie

This little man enjoys the company of almost anyone once you’ve gained his trust. He can be a little timid in new situations and requires a home where confidence building can be incorporated into his daily world. He currently lives with two larger breeds as well and very much enjoys their company. Justin is house trained and working hard on his basic obedience, he is smart so routine and consistency are key for this little man.
Skully: Miniature Pinscher Mix, 4-5 years old

Skulls is currently in foster, where he is being described as “The Best Dog Ever.” This little man loves the company of his human and enjoys snuggling up. He will also play a little, though this is still new to him. He loves to go for walks and explore the great big world that is out there. Skully bonds very quickly and will quickly become your shadow. He has demonstrated a very slight amount of separation anxiety but quiets quickly when left alone.
Louise: Pitbull mix, eight-months-old

Louise is a friendly, sweet girl that loves to play and has met other dogs without issue. Louise is house trained and currently stays home alone, with free range of the home, for four-hours without issue
SnaggleTooth: One-year-old mixed breed

This little girl appears much larger in her pictures than in real life. She’s long, low and loveable. Suzy loves running and exploring and would be a great companion for an active family that goes on weekend adventures! Suzy is working hard on her basic obedience and making huge gains! Suzy is currently living with two dogs and doing amazing.
Ethel: Two-year-old terrier/princess mix

Ethel loves to snuggle in blankets or under pillows. She is currently living with two other dogs without issue but can exhibit a bit of possessiveness. It’s important that her future home is prepared to handle this in a positive way to ensure that she learns this is not appropriate, even from a princess. Ethel is house trained and working on her basic obedience.
Spanky: Chihuahua/terrier, three-years-old

This little guy is only six pounds but don’t let his size fool you – he is full of fun. Spanky loves to play and can occupy himself with toys and tossing them around. He also enjoys socializing with other dogs but can be scared of the larger ones, understandably. Spanky has not been tested with cats, he may do okay in a home with a dog savvy one. While Spanky has proven to be very tolerant around children we feel he is best suited to a home with older children that understand his petite frame and size.
Hallie & Annie: Dachshund/Pug, puppy

These sisters are the true meaning of best friends. At approximately one-year-old they are both full of energy and fun. They are great company for each other and keep each other busy rolling around the house like little weasels. Hallie is the larger and stronger of the two at about 18 pounds while Annie sits at about 12 pounds and is more reliant on her sister. Currently, both girls are working hard on their potty training and we have no doubts will have it figured out with ongoing routine and consistency.
Kenny: Chihuahua, three-years-old

Despite his five pound stature, Kenny is a big dog. Nothing slows him down, and he’s quite happy to do what all the other dogs do. He would never admit it but he does also enjoy being carried around in a blanket like a baby. Kenny currently lives with two cats and three dogs and is quite content. Kenny is currently sporting a belly band as he is getting the hang of potty training and not needing to mark his home. Everyone has their challenges. This little critter would love to be in a home with no kids and lots of attention. He’s happy to go where you go and be where you be.
Lucy: Three-year-old terrier mix

Lucy was abandoned by her family and it has left her with some anxiety issues that she is working hard to overcome. Currently, Lucy is working with a trainer, under the care of a veterinarian, and attending doggie daycare to help her work through her issues. Lucy when at home with her family is lighthearted and fun. She loves to play with the ball, go for walks and sniff around. She is a true terrier and will select and her favorite person.
Dorothy and Sophia – bonded pair

This sweet little twosome, age 1.5 and six-months-old, is the epitome of bonded pair. These two always make sure to have the other in view and often when not snuggled together they are sure to have one paw on the other. They play together, eat together, sleep together and follow each other around the house.
Carter: 1.5-year-old Maltese/terrie

Carter is a happy-go-lucky guy that loves to play. He’s smart, sweet and loving.
Ginger: Corgi/shepherd, 1.5-years-old

Ginger is good with dogs, cats and kids and will be available on November 14.
